Half-term in London: When the school run disappears but the traffic doesn’t

There is something strange about half-term in London.
For five glorious minutes, the morning feels different. No frantic searches for school shoes, no last-minute homework discoveries, no child insisting they cannot leave without a particular jumper nobody has seen since Tuesday.
The school run has disappeared. Surely the roads should be empty?
Well, not quite.

London Without the School Bell
Around the school gates, things do go quiet. But everywhere else, families are heading to museums, grandparents are welcoming visitors, and everyone seems to have decided this is the perfect week to go somewhere. Suddenly the simple journey on the map involves a road closure and approximately seventeen traffic lights.
Welcome to London.
“So, What Shall We Do Today?”
One child wants excitement. Another wants to stay home. An adult suggests a nice walk, which is immediately rejected by everyone under sixteen. Planning a family day out can feel like organising a small international summit, except nobody agrees on the destination and somebody is already hungry.
A Tourist in Your Own City
One of the funny things about living in London is that we can spend years passing famous places without ever going in. We give directions to landmarks we’ve never properly explored.
Then half-term arrives, and suddenly we’re outside a museum, taking photographs of something we’ve walked past a hundred times. London has a way of reminding us there’s always something new to discover, even in a city we think we know.
The Journey Home
After a day out, everyone is suddenly much quieter. The snacks have disappeared, the bags feel heavier, and the youngest member of the family is somehow both exhausted and determined not to sleep. It’s in these quiet moments, on the way home, that a calm journey matters most.
A Different Kind of Week
For all the planning and detours, half-term offers something ordinary weeks often don’t: a chance to slow down, explore and enjoy a little more time together. And when the school bags come back out, part of us will miss these quieter mornings.
Well, until the next holiday, anyway.
Happy half-term, London. May your journeys be smooth, your snacks plentiful and your “Are we nearly there yet?” questions kept to a manageable level.
